Wax

A substance that may be applied to skis to enhance glide (glide wax) or to aid in grip (kick or grip wax).

Grip wax (including klisterwax and stick wax) is applied exclusively to the middle third of classic skis, whilst glide wax is used on the tips and tails of classic skis and the entire length of skating skis.
