Speed Skiing
A ski discipline that involves going downhill through a straight 1km course at the highest speed possible. Speed skiing is one of the fastest non-motorized sports on land, with skiers often exceeding 200 km/h (125 mph), which is faster than the terminal velocity of a free-falling skydiver.
The first 300 or 400 metres of the course (known as the launching area) is used to gain speed, and the last 500 metres (known as the run-out area) is used for slowing down and coming to a stop. The top speed is measured in the 100 metres between these 2 zones (the timing zone).
