Giant Slalom (GS)

An alpine skiing discipline that involves skiing between sets of poles (known as gates) spaced at a smaller distance to each other than in super G, but greater than slalom. The number of gates in this event ranges from 56 to 70 for men and from 46 to 58 for women.

Giant slalom is one of the 'technical events' (along with slalom) in alpine ski racing. This separates them from the speed events such as downhill and super G.
