Avalanche

A rapid and abrupt flow of snow (often mixed with water and air), down a mountainside. Avalanches are among the biggest dangers in the mountains for both life and property.

A public notice stating that the overall avalanche risk in a ski resort is low does not mean that a particular area is safe and checks should always be made if in doubt.

Anyone who skis off-piste should be aware of the general danger of avalanches, and should only do so if they know about the specific avalanche risks at any given time in the area they are skiing in, or is going with someone who does.
